Today the Prime Minister has announced the Government’s intention to abolish the use of Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions in the private rented sector.
Responding to the announcement, Beatrice Orchard, St Mungo’s Head of Policy, Campaigns and Research, said:
“This is fantastic news. Everyone deserves a home for good, but no fault evictions can make it very hard for people to feel settled and secure in their home. Forcing people to move regularly creates a huge financial strain and can undermine people’s resilience to push people into homelessness, or harm their ability to recover from it. Rough sleeping has more than doubled since 2010 and now more people are returning to the streets than ever before. That’s why we’ve been campaigning for more stability in the private rented sector, including an end to Section 21.
“We are very pleased the Government has listened to supporters of our Home for Good campaign and others demanding this important legal change. We look forward to responding to the consultation and supporting people with experience of rough sleeping to make their voices heard.
“The Government must also urgently get on with making housing more affordable. This means increasing Local Housing Allowance rates to ensure that housing benefit covers the rent of at least 30% of private rented homes in every local area, and building 90,000 new homes for social rent every year for the next 15 years.”
