Leading homeless charity St Mungo’s has been nominated for an award at the annual Smiley Charity Film Awards.

More than 300 charities have entered the competition this year, with an inspiring film by the St Mungo’s Digital Fundraising Team and LSK Productions being selected as a finalist in a category for large charities.

The short film tells the emotional story of a St Mungo’s client named Paul, who had been living on the streets from the age of 15. This is also where Paul found his best friend, a dog named Treacle.

Together, Paul and Treacle, who is a Staffy-Beagle cross, were supported into a London-based accommodation service run by St Mungo’s. As one of the only homelessness charities in England to accept pets into their hostels, the charity recognises the hugely powerful emotional support and companionship that dogs can bring to someone who is sleeping on the streets.

Reflecting on his bond with Treacle, Paul said: “It doesn’t matter where we’ve been, whether we’ve been in a tent or a squat, or living in a doorway… as long as she’s with me, she’s happy. Treacle is my friend and we saved each other, because without her, I wouldn’t be here. I don’t know what I’d do without her.”

Commenting on the nomination, Reta Robinson, Director of Fundraising at St Mungo’s, said:

“We are delighted to have been shortlisted for a Charity Film Award for the second year running. These awards provide us with a great opportunity to share our clients stories with a wider audience, and connect with old and new supporters.

“We’re really proud of this particular film, highlighting the special relationship between Paul and his dog Treacle, as it demonstrates why it’s so important to recognise the emotional support a pet can provide to someone experiencing homelessness. Many thanks to LSK Productions for helping us to tell Paul and Treacle’s story.”

Winners will be chosen by public votes on the Smiley Awards website and voting is open now. To cast your vote for Paul and Treacle, please visit: https://smileymovement.org/category/2021/8
