We help people leave homelessness behind.

So can you.

Support us every step of the way

Sometimes people need more than basic needs for their recovery. Our support workers are often finding new ways to help our clients, and it’s our donors’ generosity which allows us to do this.

Peer support groups

We have a range of peer support groups for clients to get together and have a safe space in which to talk, unload and share their experiences of homelessness and recovery.

This was particularly successful in our Bristol service, where staff member Jamie set up a support group specifically for men, in order to tackle a rising mental health crisis.

Putting Down Roots

Putting Down Roots is a horticultural therapy and training project, using gardening as a tool to help people in their recovery.

Putting Down Roots helps to build people’s self-esteem, confidence and sociability.

It establishes a routine by asking participants to commit to attending regular sessions, and taking responsibility in caring for plants. Learning to nurture something else helps people to learn to nurture themselves, and there is a parallel between the growth and development of plants and the growth and development of people.

Martin's story

Meet St Mungo’s client Martin. Martin was a tree surgeon, but became homeless after he split up with his girlfriend, who was pregnant.

When he was living on the streets in cold weather, Martin’s dependency on drugs became the main focus of his life.

Extreme cold weather then struck the UK, triggering a Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) response.

"My mindset was all about getting drugs – I knew what time I was going to be poorly, and I had to score to keep myself well. It was no way to live, but I didn’t know how to stop."

Sleeping rough in these freezing temperatures could’ve been fatal. But it was then that Martin found St Mungo’s, and was able to take his first step to overcoming homelessness.

Martin had his last night on the streets, and St Mungo’s have been providing him with ongoing advice and support to rebuild his life.

"My support worker helped me to access counselling to deal with my PTSD, and go to classes at St Mungo’s Recovery College. They gave me something to focus on, which helped me stop using."

Two and a half years after meeting St Mungo’s, Martin has now moved into a flat of his own. He goes to St Mungo’s gardening classes every week and is also working towards a City and Guilds qualification. He hopes to get a job as a tree surgeon again.

"I’m so proud of how far I’ve come – I’ve got a strong foundation to build on. And I see my daughter, which is brilliant. Without St Mungo’s, that wouldn’t have happened. They really have changed my life."
